As fired University of Colorado head football coach Dan Hawkins left the school yesterday, he implored everyone to support CU and the team going forward (video via The Denver Post). Now, the school looks toward the difficult task of replacing the ousted coach—which may be even more troublesome for CU than for most schools. CU is considered a bottom feeder in terms of facilities, and athletic director Mike Bohn says he’s not sure the school can afford some of the better coaches available.

The Denver Post reiterates that the Buffs are looking at former coach Bill McCartney, as well as Air Force Coach Troy Calhoun, who has deflected questions from the Colorado Springs Gazette about the possible job change. Former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti, Les Miles—the fiery coach from Louisiana State University—Colorado high school coaching powerhouse Dave Logan, and former NFL coach Jon Gruden are also on the media’s vast radar of possibilities. Interim coach Brian Cabral should also get a look, but his name isn’t high on most prognosticators’ lists.

Boulder’s Daily Camera notes that the school doesn’t necessarily have to hire someone with Colorado connections. The Post also reports that the Buffs’ small group of recruits is taking a wait-and-see approach, with at least one saying he may rethink his commitment depending on who the school hires.
