The John Elway-as-executive era started for the Denver Broncos last week, and compared to the reserved public nature of former head coach Josh McDaniels, Elway’s candor has been refreshing. He’s given multiple interviews—local and national—and created a Twitter feed that has amassed nearly 30,000 followers in less than a week. He learned a lesson this weekend, however, in how quickly such openness can lead to misunderstanding.

Elway told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King on Saturday that quarterback Tim Tebow “isn’t a good NFL quarterback at this time,” a statement that apparently meant the Broncos would try to trade Tebow. Elway quickly took to his Twitter feed, writing, “To clarify my thoughts on Tim Tebow…I think he’s a very good football player, and if anyone can turn themselves into a great QB, Tim can.” King makes space in his popular Monday Morning Quarterback column today to respond: “I never said, or implied, that John Elway was thinking or looking to trade Tim Tebow.”

Meanwhile, Elway has moved on to interviewing head-coach candidates, including New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and Broncos interim head coach Eric Studesville, with Elway tweeting that both went well. Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox is slated for today, followed tomorrow by Houston Texans offensive coordinator and former Broncos offensive line coach Rick Dennison, as well as Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, reports The Denver Post.
