While taxes are generally the business of state legislators, discussions tend to focus on how to cut or spend them—not how to file and pay. But state Senator Pat Steadman, a Denver Democrat, has proposed a seemingly win-win idea in which individuals and businesses that did not file their tax returns before the end of last year can avoid penalties, including criminal ones.

The bill states that tax dodging and other forms of delinquency would be waived and the accrued interest cut in half if the offenders simply pay what’s due (Denver Business Journal). The measure is being billed as an amnesty that could reap the cash-starved state about $15 million to fund education, which is looking down the barrel of $332 million in cuts. Another Denver Democrat, Representative Mark Ferrandino, thinks the bill will gain bipartisan support (Colorado Independent).
