The death of Belgium’s Wouter Weylandt this week during the Giro d’Italia has had a serious impact on the cycling community, and members of Boulder’s Garmin-Cervelo team in particular. Weylandt was killed when he crashed after catching one of his pedals on a wall (Brisbane Times). Garmin-Cervelo’s David Millar took the lead after Weylandt’s fall, although it was impossible to celebrate under such circumstances (Denver Post). The tragedy was too much for Garmin-Cervelo’s Tyler Farrar, among Weylandt’s closest friends and training partners who have left the race (VeloNews).

The Giro will last through May 29, but some members of the team will head to South Lake Tahoe for the Amgen Tour of California, which begins this weekend. Garmin-Cervelo has finished second in the race for the past three years, but they may best that record with what Velo News calls “a roster that, on paper, is the deepest in the race.”
