Climbing fanatics take note: There are some major events coming up in the world of sport climbing—one of which has found its way to Boulder.

The sport has officially entered its World Cup season (if you didn’t already know). The 2013 Sport Climbing Series (SCS) Open National Championship will be held this weekend to determines who makes the U.S. team for the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup. The event takes place throughout Saturday and Sunday at Movement Boulder (check the schedule here). If you’re interested in attending, tickets are only $7.50 for the finals; all other events are free.

Also, make sure to stay tuned for next month. May is big for sport climbing, which is one of eight shortlisted sports vying for wrestling’s vacant spot in the 2020 Olympics. If accepted for the Games, medal ranking would be based on a combined score of lead climbing (leading the ascent, protected by a belayer), speed climbing (climbing only with a top rope, ranking determined by time) and bouldering (rope-free short climbs, ranking based on number of boulders completed).

Each of the contenders for the Olympic opening will give presentations to the executive board of the International Olympic Committee in St. Petersburg, Russia, in May. The hopefuls: baseball/softball, karate, roller sports, squash, wakeboarding, wushu, and wrestling. The final decision will be made in Buenos Aires in September 2013.

Let the games begin.
