Alba Restaurant Bar and Grill, the flagship venue of long-time owner Rick Stein, will soon be no more. On October 10, the handsome spot in Boulder’s Village Shopping Center will become Volta, a modern Mediterranean restaurant. Under new owners Jon and Eleni Deering, Volta (a Latin term meaning a “trip” or “excursion”) will focus on the flavors of Southern France, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Morocco. Executive chef Thomas d’Aquin of Denver’s Greek restaurant Axios Estiatorio will oversee the menu.

Locals will recognize Jon from his many years managing the front of the house and serving as beverage manager and director at many local spots including the Chautauqua Dining Hall, Colterra, Salt Bistro, Sunflower, Restaurant 4580, and Black Cat. Eleni, who also worked the front of the house at Black Cat, was born in Greece and grew up in the food industry where her family operated restaurants in the San Francisco area.

The Deerings plan to run Alba, as is, until September 28, followed by a quick remodel to bring a more modern look to the room. Loyal customers will see tributes to the old spot (Alba’s iconic lasagna will remain on the menu) but the rest of the offerings, including a whole new wine collection, will bring fresh perspective to the beloved space.
