While it resembles something seen in a galaxy far, far away, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is just about a four-hour drive from Denver. Scientists believe a combination of volcanic eruption, lake erosion, and sediment carried from the mountains formed the dunes, which are exhilarating to hike and sandboard.
