There’s a tiny store inside the Children’s Hospital Colorado’s south campus in Highlands Ranch that is a must-visit for any parent (but if you blink, you may miss it). Tucked in the back of the gift shop, behind the doe-eyed stuffed animals, the Safety Store, which opened in February as the only Colorado location, is a curated gold mine of the kids products parents need to avoid an unintentional trip to the hospital.

Most parents on the hunt for a carseat that is supposed to save their child’s life usually starts the painstaking process by researching online, and ends meandering through a big-box retailer. Skip the hassle and uncertainty at this one-stop-shop, which stocks only the best carseats, and offers free fitting appointments and inspections. But the expertise doesn’t stop at the car. Trained safety specialists are on-hand to help you navigate the often overwhelming world of infant sleepwear, baby-proofing, and even multi-sport helmets for older kids. Erin Baum, Safety Store’s manager, says that many of the products at the shop are sold below the price of other retailers and always come with a pediatrician recommendation. “We want people to come in and ask questions,” Baum says. “A lot of injury prevention doesn’t even cost money, it’s just knowledge.”

Our pick: Check out the BubbleBum portable carseat booster. The inflatable seat ($29.99) fits inside a backpack and is the ideal addition (albeit, we didn’t know it existed until our Safety Store visit) for the Colorado family on the go.

Visit: The Safety Store is open Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Thursday, 1 to 7 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the first Saturday of every month 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1811 Plaza Dr., Highlands Ranch; 720-478-0026; childrenscolorado.org
