Karen Roehl Solo Exhibition: Unfolding

What: From her earliest days, Denverite Karen Roehl has been honing her craft—from making art as a child to earning a BFA at the University of Colorado Denver to creating large-scale Western-inspired works. At this solo exhibition, she’ll show off the results of her effort and her evolution as a painter. This particular show features her mural-sized abstract works, which are inspired by the Abstract Expressionist tradition.

What: Seeing Coloradan Nicole Grosjean’s work is almost like looking into another world: Each piece contains so much color and detail. The Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design alumna draws inspiration from fantasy and nature to craft her sculptural illustrations of animals, plants, and mythological creatures. Using hundreds of layers of textured paper, watercolor, gouache, and 24-karat gold accents, the artist makes her pieces complex environments that are difficult to resist.

Animalia

What: Denver is home to thousands of animal lovers (think: all the dogs you see on your morning jog in Wash Park)—the perfect audience for a group of creatives fascinated by creatures and the natural world. The group exhibition features about 20 talented artists, who portray the mysterious beauty of animals in a wide variety of genres.
Ron Hicks Solo Exhibition: Esoteric Meanderings
Where: Gallery 1261, 1412 Wazee St.
When: September 7–28
Opening Reception: September 7, 6–8 p.m.
What: With this collection of partially abstracted portraits, local artist Ron Hicks asks his viewers to participate in the storytelling process. Instead of presenting a clear narrative within his art, he incorporates emotive movements and white space in his oil paintings of female figures to encourage gallery visitors to draw their own conclusions about his subjects.
Louis Recchia Solo Show: New Works
Where: Pirate Contemporary Art, 7130 W. 16th Ave., Lakewood
When: September 27 to October 13
Opening Reception: September 27, 6–10 p.m.
What: In his paintings, contemporary artist Louis Recchia, who has been part of the Mile High City art scene for more than four decades, incorporates images from pop culture to reveal—and question—what we value as a culture. This exhibition will include a series of new oil-on-canvas works, many of which depict surreal, whimsical scenes of humans interacting with animals.
