My Kings Ice Cream Opens With 12 Rotating Flavors, Cereal Milkshakes

Young entrepreneur Le’Day Grant serves Magill’s ice cream in a cheery space on Colorado Boulevard.

Twenty-five-year-old Le’Day Grant’s life was already quite busy when she saw that a vacant storefront was available for rent on Colorado Boulevard. Grant was working at a full-time banking job during the week, part-time at Walmart on weekends, and she’s also a mom to a two-year-old son. But when she saw the For Rent sign in the former doughnut shop window, the young entrepreneur knew that it was the perfect place to open her passion business, My Kings Ice Cream.

“You know when you get that light bulb? I saw this space for rent and thought: ice cream,” Grant says.

Wanting to bring tasty frozen treats to the neighborhood but not having ice cream-making expertise herself, Grant went to the whizzes at Magill’s Ice Cream, the Lakewood-based shop that’s been churning since 1981. At My Kings, Grant serves 12 rotating, ultra-creamy Magill’s flavors, including the coffee buzz-heavy Sleepless in Seattle, rich Caramel Fudge Brownie Swirl, sprinkles- and frosting-speckled Birthday Cake, and colorful, kid-approved Superman.

Even more fun than the ice cream cones are the nostalgic cereal milkshakes, made with your favorite Saturday morning varieties like Fruity Pebbles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Later this summer, Grant hopes to add snow cones with dollops of cream on top for a unique crunchy-creamy texture.

The interior of My Kings Ice Cream is painted an upbeat bubble gum pink and vibrant teal, and with a tagline of “Building the community one scoop at a time,” it’s a positive place to go for a sweet treat. Grant wants to encourage even more visitors and better utilize the storefront by opening it up as a community gathering and meeting space. “I want to contribute something to the community,” she says. “Building the community one scoop at a time is my mission, and I want to support that in many ways.”

My Kings Ice Cream opened at a difficult time: March 1, or two weeks before COVID-19 turned everything upside down. In spite of that major challenge, word is spreading that Grant’s shop is a friendly spot for a delicious frozen treat. Just be sure to check current hours before you go—Grant still works full-time at the bank,  operating her scoop shop on Saturday and Sunday, 1–8 p.m., and Monday, 1–5 p.m.
