Through his viewfinder, Denver photographer Kevin Mohatt watched as the demonstrations downtown morphed from heated clashes to peaceful sit-ins to, at times, an almost celebratory atmosphere. “That has caught me,” says Mohatt, who spent several days capturing images of the protests in late May and early June. “They’re happy. People are showing that we’re going to keep marching no matter what.” Mohatt is quick to explain, however, that like others in the Black community he, too, is angry—but it’s a constructive anger from which he believes positive energy can flow. This image, taken in Civic Center Park, “sums up the demonstrations for me,” he says. “It’s peaceful, but it emphasizes that the Black community is fighting for something important.” See more of Mohatt’s images from the Black Lives Matter protests at 5280.com and on Instagram (@kevin.mohatt)
