11 Reasons to Love Denver

Reasons to Love Denver: The Black Lives Matter Protesters

Some names we knew, others we didn’t. But during the Black Lives Matter protests, they all told Denver what it needed to hear.

“The time is always right to do what’s right. Once we have awareness, we’ve got to use our moral compass to make decisions on what’s right. Black, white, it doesn’t matter. It’s 2020. Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jim Brown are still fighting this fight, and it’s up to us to keep it going.” —Von Miller

“Telling someone who’s oppressed how to respond to oppression is not OK.” —Kenny White

“We shouldn’t have to be here. The fact that it’s 2020, we’ve had a Black president, we have a Black mayor here, but nothing has really changed is telling.” —Tay Anderson

“We’ve tried for years to be peaceful. But what’s happened? We’re still out here. Where was the civility for Trayvon Martin? Where was the peace for Eric Garner? Where was the nonviolence for George Floyd? These are the questions that we have to ask our elected officials. The prosecutors, the judges, the mayors. The only way they will listen to us is if we show up in masses like we have today. I just hope in 10 years, when I’m 27, I don’t have to be out here in front of the Capitol building.” —Kaleb Negussie
