Special Issue:Columbine: Twenty Years After

On April 20, 2019, Colorado and the nation will mark 20 years since the tragedy at Columbine High School. Considered by many to be the first modern-day school shooting, this unspeakable event has had lasting effects on many aspects of American life. Sadly, our state was the backdrop for this seminal moment in U.S. history, and we believe it is our responsibility to not only reflect on this fateful incident, but also to examine where we are two decades later.

For our April 2019 issue, we plan to devote the entire feature well—30-plus pages—to the subject of mass-casualty situations in our schools. Our objective is not to rehash the devastation wreaked at Columbine, but rather to place it in context and draw lines to what we are still seeing today in places like Parkland, Florida, and Santa Fe, Texas. Through our reporting, research, and storytelling, we hope to contribute in a meaningful way to ongoing discussions about the roles mental health care, media coverage, law enforcement response, and campus security play into this public health crisis in our country.

As always, we endeavor to be sensitive, thoughtful, questioning, analytical, and informative in our coverage. We are able to tell these important stories thanks to the combined support of our passionate readers and you, our valued advertisers.

With this special issue, we’ll be taking that partnership a step further. We’ve identified some of the very best community organizations supporting our area’s first responders, mental health advocacy, and anti-violence initiatives. Through our print pages, website, and social media feeds, we’re offering you the opportunity to team up with 5280 to encourage our readers to engage with these non-profits. Your support of this partnership will be acknowledged in a high-profile spotlight on the organizations, and we encourage you to also feature it within your own ad.

Together, we can send the message that while Columbine will always be part of our history, the future is unwritten.
