The Local newsletter is your free, daily guide to life in Colorado. For locals, by locals.
History textbooks of old may have led you to believe that slavery ended with President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. But the reality is that it took several years for liberation to make its way through the Confederacy. So now, in mid-June, we celebrate a major milestone in the historic fight for racial equality: Juneteenth. The day commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to finally enforce the Emancipation Proclamation there.
This week, communities across Denver are hosting events to honor Black history, culture, and creativity. Whether you want to celebrate with soul food, a burlesque show, or a four-mile run, find a Juneteenth fete that fits below.
