Though this American artist became known for leading the country’s abstract expressionist movement in the 1940s, his first attempts at painting occurred in Canada two decades earlier. Now, Coloradans can see some of the painter’s first pieces, including a young self-portrait, oil paintings of blue-collar workers in Alberta’s Bow Island and Killam, as well as his older, more abstract pieces. Viewers will be able to see the beginnings of the creative genius’ style, and examine the lasting impact that his Canadian upbringing had on him.
