Repeat Offenders
In this new show of oil paintings, artist Sharon Bond Brown displays black-and-white portraits from her long-running series “Creators” alongside her colorful “Damage” paintings of alleged murderers and other criminals. While her “Creators” pieces communicate vivacity despite their grayscale palette, Brown’s 22-by-20-inch “Damage” images are done in color—even though they’re based off black-and-white mug shots. (The artist injects life into these otherwise depressing photos by recreating them bigger and brighter.) These dual series explore how society uses portraiture and how those images can be transformed. By appointment.
