Long before Lady Gaga and Katie Perry’s outlandish attire became red carpet staples, New Zealand’s international fashion, theater, and arts extravaganza was paving the way for off-the-wall couture creations. This traveling exhibit will showcase dozens of the 31-year-old contest’s most provocative designs, such as an intricate lobster-inspired garment complete with oversized claws, antennae, and moving tail. Beyond high fashion, the vestments are true artistic triumphs: Take David Walker’s Lady of the Wood, a facsimile of a 1700s ballgown carved entirely out of mahogany and cherry trees.
