Even though this frenetic artist now calls the Centennial State home, his work recalls the history of his home country, Japan. Saito pours liquid bronze over small, wooden sticks to create casts—a technique that has ancient roots in Asia. Once the metal has cooled and set, he welds the pieces to form nest-like sculptures inspired by the fishing baskets, often used to transport home the day’s catch, that he encountered as a child in Japan during the 1960s.
