In 2012, we discovered something unimaginable—a significant number of Denver area school kids were experiencing weekend hunger. This needed to change. Founding Food for Thought Denver in March 2012, we began by targeting two DPS schools where more than 9 out of 10 students were on the Free and Reduced Meal Benefit Program during the school week. Each Friday afternoon, we delivered “powersacks” (one per student) to these schools. Each sack contained enough non-perishable food to feed a family of four for the weekend. As we began to see how our actions were changing lives, the movement caught hold, word spread, volunteers came, and so have the donations. Before the COVID-19 crisis, FFT Denver was delivering to 52 different Denver, Aurora and Adams County schools. However, recent circumstances have us now partnering with DPS and Food Bank of the Rockies as we deliver 3,500 powersacks to Denver area families each week. FFT Denver is a 100% volunteer organization.
