On August 22, 2016, my now 16-year-old daughter, Abbey, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We had no family history of the disease and no idea what to do next. The doctors at Children’s Hospital told us a world-leading diabetes research and care facility, the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC), was right here in Denver and they sent us there the very next day. The care and support of the doctors and staff at the BDC have been life changing for Abbey and our whole family.
The Children’s Diabetes Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Barbara Davis Center and focuses on patient support, diabetes research, and public awareness. The BDC is an incredible force in the diabetes world. It’s a world-class center with top doctors, cutting-edge research, and passionate patient care teams. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation is able to supplement programs and funds to improve every patient’s life.
As a Senior Vice President at Empower Retirement, I am proud of my company for many reasons, not least of which is our encouraged involvement in the community. When Abbey was diagnosed, I was able to raise my hand and ask how I can help. I now serve on the Board of Directors at the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and help find ways to fund raise and create greater community outreach in support of those living with type 1 diabetes. Empower has been an incredible financial supporter, but also shows support through our associates volunteering their time. I know that, together, we will do great things!
