Diabetes Awareness Month: Honoring the Journey of Those with Type 1 Diabetes

November marks Diabetes Awareness Month, an essential time to spotlight the lives of those living with diabetes and the ongoing efforts to find a cure.

During this month, millions come together across the United States to raise awareness, honor those affected, and educate the public. Since its inception in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization, World Diabetes Day has been celebrated annually on November 14 to increase awareness of diabetes’ growing health threat. The campaign reaches over a billion people in more than 160 countries, reflecting a unified global commitment to diabetes education and advocacy.

In My Type 1 Era: A Campaign for Diabetes Awareness Month

This year, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) proudly presents the In My Type 1 Era campaign, dedicated to showcasing the personal stories and journeys of those living with type 1 diabetes. Through this initiative, CDF aims to inspire individuals to take pride in their experiences, foster a supportive community, and advocate for increased awareness, care and support of patients, and research funding for new improvements and ultimately a cure.

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation strives to empower patients, their families, and the broader community to advocate for a world where those with type 1 diabetes aren’t limited by the disease. Their mission involves supporting the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes to continue state-of-the-art clinical care and research. CDF also drives many programs assisting families financially, creating community engagement initiatives, and building a network where everyone with type 1 diabetes feels seen, supported, and hopeful for the future.

What Does In My Type 1 Era Mean?

The In My Type 1 Era campaign is more than a series of activities—it’s a movement. Living with type 1 diabetes comes with unique challenges, victories, and transformative moments. This era is about embracing these experiences with resilience and pride, whether you’re newly diagnosed, a longtime warrior, a caregiver, or a supporter.

“I Can Do It with a Broken Pancreas” is a phrase central to the campaign. It’s a declaration that embodies the strength, determination, and adaptability that defines life with type 1 diabetes. Every day presents challenges, but with each hurdle, there’s a story of courage and perseverance.

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation views type 1 diabetes as an “era” with the conviction that it won’t last forever. Research and medical advancements at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes gives hope that a cure will be found. Until then, they celebrate this era as one of resilience, community, and hope, underscoring the strength of everyone who lives with, supports, or advocates for those with type 1 diabetes.

Why Raising Awareness Matters

Each month, approximately 130 children in the US are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This lifelong condition affects individuals of all ages, with symptoms that can be managed but require daily diligence and resilience. Raising awareness during Diabetes Awareness Month is essential for several reasons:

  • Education: Many people are unaware of the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells, making lifelong insulin therapy essential. By educating the public, we can dispel myths and promote a better understanding of the challenges faced by those with type 1 diabetes.
  • Research Funding: Awareness campaigns bring attention to the need for research funding. Medical advancements have made strides in managing diabetes, but a cure remains the ultimate goal. Funding for research is vital to support innovative approaches to treatment and, eventually, a cure.
  • Community Support: Living with type 1 diabetes can sometimes feel isolating; it impacts many different parts of life, from increased mental health challenges to the financial burden of lifelong medical expenses. By raising awareness, we build a more understanding and supportive community, offering encouragement to those affected.
