CU #2 in Peace Corp Volunteers

By |

Here’s a statistic we can all be proud of — the University of Colorado has been ranked #2 in the nation in number of volunteers to the Peace Corps. We have 104 total volunteers.

Since 1961, more than 178,000 volunteers have served in the Peace Corps, working in such diverse fields as education, health, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, information technology, business development, the environment and agriculture. Approximately 5,755 of these have been from Colorado.

First, thanks to each and every one of them. Second, who beat us? It was the University of Wisconsin at Madison with 127 volunteers. Which college has had the most volunteers since the inception of the Peace Corps in 1961? University of California at Berkeley. Looking at the entire list (pdf) brings back many memories of the good old days, when protests ruled and war was out of vogue:

  1. University of Wisconsin Madison — 129
  2. University of Colorado Boulder — 104
  3. University of Washington — 98
  4. University of California Berkeley — 94
  5. University of Texas Austin — 90
  6. University of Michigan Ann Arbor — 85

It’s almost enough to make us watch Forrest Gump again.
