Walk, Don’t Run—Unless You’re Trying to Qualify for the Boston Marathon

For those of you who’ve been meaning to get serious about running but often feel defeated, take heart: It turns out walking is just as good for you as jogging, especially when done consistently. “It’s safer, in general, easier on your joints, and you can burn just as many calories,” says Danita Chirichillo of the Avon Recreation Center (Vail Daily). She cites a new Mayo Clinic study that finds 30 to 60 minutes of walking per day can burn as many calories as running.

While regular walking might be good for you, it won’t help you train to run like Franklin Tenorio, the fastest Coloradan to qualify yesterday for the Boston Marathon (Run Colorado). Tenorio finished 19th overall in just under two hours and 18 minutes, ahead of numerous other locals who also made the cut.

If your skill level puts you between a daily walker and a marathon runner, and you prefer to throw in some other activities for variety, you may want to sign up for the Gypsum Triathlon on April 30. The beginner sprint-distance section of the event is a 200-meter swim, 10-mile bike ride, and one-mile run (Eagle Valley Enterprise).
