Get The Look: Game Day Fashion

By |

Summer 2014—otherwise known as the season fashion and sports fully intersect. Recently, topics such as which FIFA team had the best jersey design, or how Maria Sharapova incorporated on-trend elements into her US Open outfit last week (that flirty LBD), have been dissected by the likes of GQ and Glamour. This makes sense from a fashion perspective, as the sport-meets-ready-to-wear trend has been a runway staple for a while now. Fall 2014 saw designers continuing to integrate technical fabrics and sport motifs into their collections, from mesh inserts at Fendi (looks #13 and #14, below) to Tom Ford’s sequin football jersey dresses (looks #20 and #21). With tomorrow marking the start of the NFL’s regular season, I have some suggestions for game-day looks to make sure you’re as ready to go as the players.

Cherry Creek North’s Division West stocks limited-edition kicks and cool surf/skate brands (like RVCA). The shop’s vintage-inspired Broncos shirts ($60 to $80), caps ($24 to $28), and socks ($12), all by Mitchell & Ness, allow fans to outfit themselves in orange and blue from head-to-toe—while reminding them just how rad 1990s design could be (even Thunder looks meaner on the team logo). My top pick is the sweatshirt with elbow patches and orange striped sleeves ($80, pictured above right). The trick with DW is to get there fast; even though new shipments of Broncos merch should arrive soon, the store is blowing through product every day.

If your style is a bit more classic, look to Tommy Bahama. The brand may be known as a purveyor of island chic attire, but at its core it’s simply all-American. So it’s no surprise that the company partnered with the NFL to create a capsule collection of three styles for football season, including a wool-and-leather varsity jacket and button-up sweatshirt for men. Likely because it was, in part, designed with ladies in mind, I’m partial to the Goal Line ($148), a soft and cozy half-zip pullover in pima cotton. The fit is relaxed but not sloppy making it an easy piece to layer. (It’s available in orange and navy for men and orange for women.)

For those girls who want the football equivalent of a tennis bracelet, check out jewelry line Pandora’s engraved NFL charms. The sterling silver and 14K gold football helmet with the Broncos logo ($160) can be added to any bracelet style. My suggestion: Try it on one of the braided leather versions for a look that’s modern yet casual.
