BluNozer Kaffee-Tiques Brings Homestyle to Mayfair

This cafe-meets-antique-shop dishes drinks, desserts, and decor.

There’s nothing quite like cozying up with a mug of coffee in mom’s kitchen. That’s just the feeling you’ll find at Dorothy Timmons Hotchkiss’ month-old BluNozer Kaffee-Tiques. The cafe, which sits on Ivy Street just south of Colfax Avenue, features all the amenities of a charming dining room—with fantastic coffee and snacks to boot.

Sip on drip java from local Elevation Coffee Traders, or spring for espresso made the old fashioned way in a stovetop Italian brewer. Both options offer smooth, bright flavors and no frills. BluNozer (a play on the nickname for those hailing from Nova Scotia), may not be for the coffee snob seeking the perfect pull, but it’s a lovely spot for someone wanting a thoughtful drink with all the comforts of home.

Pair your cup of joe with any of BluNozer’s fantastic homemade items: Timmons Hotchkiss’ freshly made breakfast burritos come smothered in her sister’s pork green chile sauce. An ever-changing array of pastries come straight from the family cookbook. Try a dense, sugary blonde brownie or the chocolate-chip Bundt cake (pictured). The fluffy chocolate cake, studded with chips and garnished with powdered sugar and fresh berries, is made by Timmons Hotchkiss’s mother.

You won’t spend much on breakfast (a mug of coffee, breakfast burrito, and a pastry will run you under $10), but consider dropping some cash on decor. Antique mirrors, cafe knick-knacks, and even select BluNozer seating are up for grabs. Timmons Hotchkiss, who managed the adjacent antique store for years, has a great eye.

BluNozer is, refreshingly, not a place to grab and go. Instead, prepare to gab and linger in the warmth of a cafe that feels like home.
