Drink This: The Post Brewing Co.’s Achtertuin Seizoen

This refreshing “everyday beer” took home a gold medal at GABF 2016.

In a former VFW post on the edge of downtown Lafayette, about 30 miles north of Denver, The Post Brewing Co. is making a name for itself with its exemplary brews.

Success came quickly for the east Boulder County brewery: Its Howdy Beer was awarded the Great American Beer Festival’s American/International Style Pilsner silver medal less than 10 months after it opened in 2014. The Post returned to the GABF this year, and its Achtertuin Seizoen (“backyard season” in Dutch) scored the gold medal in the festival’s classic saison category.

Brewmaster Bryan Selders, who spent 19 years as a brewer at Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales in Delaware and starred on Discovery Channel’s short-lived seriesBrewmasters,” says his vision for the Seizoen was to create an everyday beer that “would restore you, refresh you, and make you feel good.” He accomplished this by maintaining saison’s blue-collar roots as an thirst-quenching ale favored by farm workers in France and Belgium. His take on the refreshing brew clocks in at just 5.6 percent ABV.

Selders says he chose each ingredient with an eye toward distinct flavor compounds that would marry into a complex whole. There’s rye for gentle spiciness and wheat for a soft mouth feel. His choice of Sterling and Willamette hop varieties is an ideal combo—the Willamette’s earthy lemon flavor complements the Sterling’s pepper and herb notes. The resulting saison is dry and tart, but not sour. For Selders, the finished product triggers warm memories of drinking saisons with his host family during a study abroad stint in Holland.

Thanks to the Seizoen’s subtle flavor profile, it’s also a versatile partner for food. It can stand up to hearty dishes, but is also delicate enough to pair nicely with a salad. Most fittingly, the brew’s gently acidic finish cuts through fried fare (such as the Post’s trademark fried chicken) to cleanse the palate.

The Post began selling the Achtertuin Seizoen in 750-ml bottles earlier this year, but the beer may be best enjoyed at one of the brewery’s taprooms in Lafayette or Longmont (a third is slated to open in December in Denver’s Rosedale neighborhood), where you can sip it while enjoying that fried chicken.
