When New York–based ClassPass launched in Denver in December 2014, fitness junkies were thrilled. An affordable gym membership—it started at $79 per month—that offered unlimited classes ranging from HITT to barre to boxing at studios around town? What’s not to like?
Unsurprisingly, that business model wasn’t sustainable, and ClassPass was forced to raise its prices to try to compensate. Gyms began limiting the number of class spots available for ClassPass users as it became clear that their own memberships weren’t growing from the service. And then, in November, ClassPass was forced to drop the unlimited option. Now, the question users are asking is: What’s to like about the service?
The answer, as of late March, is online video workouts. Every ClassPass membership now comes with unlimited access to a library of 100-plus videos from about 25 studios and fitness gurus, including personal trainers without their own brick-and-mortar locations. “We’ve always known there are limited spots in every class, and not everyone lives in one of the places where we’ve launched a product,” says ClassPass founder Payal Kadakia. “And so many of our members wanted to continue to work out when they might be traveling or on a day it snows or rains. We wanted to make sure everyone had the feeling of being able to work out as many times as they want to.”
ClassPass plans to grow this feature over time, but for now, the only Denver-based instructors offering video content through the platform are Scott and Laura St. John, the team behind the Pearl Street Fitness gym and spin-off fitness and nutrition company Strong Confident Living (SCL).
The St. Johns have been streaming free online workouts for years, so the partnership with ClassPass was a logical fit. “The videos were born when we were trying to figure out how to translate this raw, real fitness experience at Pearl Street to a way bigger audience,” Laura says. “Our mission is to reach millions of people around the world.” (Already, more than 100 viewers tune in to SCL’s videos each day.)
For ClassPass, SCL will release a new seven-video series focused on bodyweight exercises four times a year—amounting to 28 videos total—but members can already watch two series, one beach-themed and one set in the graffitied alleys of RiNo. To get a taste the type of calf-busting, tricep-shredding moves they might include, check out this video:
