Hunter Thompson, RIP

Colorado's Gonzo Journalist Hunter Thompson fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Woody Creek Compound outside of Aspen. He was 67. Bob Braudis, Pitkin County Sheriff and close friend of Hunter's, confirmed the death. Hunter's family has asked for privacy. Here is Hunter's last Hey Rube! column, dated February 15, 2005, which ends with the prophetic line:
So long and Mahalo.
Hunter was a genius and a cultural icon. I know he was plagued by health problems this past year. I'm sure 5280 joins me in extending sincere condolences to his family, including his wife Anita and son Juan, and his many friends.
