Supreme Court Rules Sick People Can't Smoke Pot

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that sick people can't smoke pot. Coloradans believe otherwise. That's why they passed a law in 2000 allowing residents to possess and grow marijuana for personal use. The court based its decision on the commerce clause of the Constitution and found that growing pot in one's own backyard for personal use properly falls within its ambit. The decision means that the federal government can continue to charge medical marijuana users and those who provide pot to them, even though Colorado won't. You can read the opinion and the dissents of Justices O'Connor, Rehnquist and Thomas here.
