Poor Little Pigeon

This is going to sound strange coming from me. However, I need to know if anyone has any ideas about what to do with an injured pigeon who has made my backyard its refuge. (Putting it out of its misery is NOT an option for me, so please don't bother suggesting that.) Something terrible happened to it -- my small backyard is full of feathers, and the sad little bird is missing all of its tail feathers and a lot of its wing feathers. It can't fly, and therefore seems to be stuck inside my privacy fence, making it my responsibility, the way I see it. So far I haven't tried to do anything to it other than put out water and food. I'm such a softie. I hate pigeons in general -- they try to roost on my front porch and I've had to put up anti-roost spikes and wire off some of the cozier-looking areas in the rafters. But I just can't look at this poor beat-up bird and not help it. So. I called the Dumb Friends League, and left a message for the Wild Birds Rescue, to no avail. At the risk of gaining a pet pigeon, does anyone have a suggestion as to what to do?

anyone can contact me and I will try to help. animalrescuer131@yahoo.com I have rescued and doctored over 3,000 pigeons.

I found a pigeon just sitting on the street all fluffed up but breathing. She had a little blood on her eye. I picked her up and put her in a box and gave her some sugar water (found that on line). The next morning she perked up and seems fine but can't fly. Her wings look okay. She tries to fly. I called the bird sanctuary place and they can't take her because she isn't a native bird. I feel like she is lonely. She eats and drinks..seems comfortable but lonely. I am just giving her a few more weeks to see if she will eventually be able to fly and if not I will get her a dove for a friend.

I found a pigeon on the ground all fluffed up with a little blood on her eye. I took her home and put her in a box and gave her some sugar water and left her alone overnight (in the house). I got the sugar water from injured pets site. She can't fly but her wings seem okay and the Bird rescue won't take her because she isn't a native bird. She tries to fly but I think has some brain damage. She eats and drinks but I think she is lonely so I will give her a few more weeks and if she can't fly I will get her a friend (dove).

I didn't realize the first message went through. Oh well..

Follow-up posting on the pigeon found in Wheat Ridge: I decided to take him to Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center this a.m. (they are up in Longmont, but it's worth the trip - the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, and I feel like he's in good hands.) Good luck with your bird, Rebekah.

Rebekah: If your pigeon still can't fly, I might have found a friend for her, another pigeon that I found in an intersection in Wheatridge earlier today; s/he also may have a head injury, as s/he cannot fly, but both wings seem fine. Assuming s/he survives and eats in captivity, and is still unable to fly, maybe you'd be interested in caring for both birds? (I already have a parrot who is very jealous and not interested in sharing her "mommy" with any other life forms...) I'll check back on this site later in the week if the pigeon is still with me.

Hi, Last week a nice wild pigeon fell in my garden. It does fine, though it does not have wings on its tail anymore. I am afraid to set it free now as there are some cats in the neighbourhood. I do not like to leave it in the cage but if I let it be outside, it flies directly to walls and it can get hurt. Could you please let me know how long does it take for the wings to grow over again? Thanks in advance Carolina

Hey I have a suggestion. I rescued a baby pigeon around april of this year and now he comes back daily and then started only a few days aweek. He is coming for food and I can even hug him. I would suggest put the bird in a metal crate that is big and doctor the bird and keep the bird safe and feed the bird and put whatever meds you need. good attention and loving will help out the bird. At night put the bird in a safe place away from predators. And when you think the bird has enoug feathers then let the bird go free and they will visit you. I consider it a priveledge to look on the beauty of birds.

So good to hear these many kind words about pigeons! An often underrated bird, alas. Here's a playful pigeon resource site that sponsors an excellent pigeon 'talk' group, where one can seek experienced advice on just about any pigeon or dove health crisis or care question: http://pigeon-life.com/ Click on "Pigeon-Talk" at the top of the page, and it'll take you to the discussion site. Best wishes, to people and birds, Forest http://www.forestrogers.com

project music for animals i found a pigeon he was hit by a car and would have died.. i took him home and kept him safe i turned my old pop top van into a pigeon loft and let him live in the van... i loved little feathers and she stayed with me for one year and 3 months.... recently she was trying to fly alot.and i sometimes try to reach my hand out to her.. but she usually doesn't sit on my hand. she never tried to leave before but the other day she took off and left the van and has not returned. i cried.... i thought she would come back after being with me for over a year what should i do... she limps because her leg was injured by the car that hit her i nursed her for over a year and kept her safe and warm with good food and water i tried to get her to sit on my finger before and she didn't leave but she left. my heart is broken will she come back/ she did have a nice little space about 16 feet a van loft. with good head space i will miss her and i will worry if she is safe

So this is funny! Here I am searching for #'s to a pigeon rescue place and found this about Pidge. :) My husband seems to have a knack for rescuing animals and brought a pigeon home the other day from the site he's remodeling in Capital Hill. I hear stories from his Mum about him bringing not just cats and dogs but Seagulls and rabbits, and even a chicken!, home years ago. He was worried the cats that are around would get it so it is in a little cage in my kitchen. It is pretty sweet and likes him much more than me! He has a big whole in his wing (is doing fine though, not to worry!) and cannot fly. We have dogs so I can't let him run around in the yard unless it is supervised. They are 2 big bird dogs, but are way more interested in the squirrel that teases them. He does make little cuing noises to my husband and I feel mean in making him take it somewhere. I suppose I will let him keep it if he just can't bare to see him go, but either way I promise to make sure he is taken care of. And I have completely ignored people who say they're like rats and I should just let him go and he'll see his fate! Every little animal deserves a chance.

Hey - Thanks for bringing Pidge in. I volunteer at the rehab center. You are our hero.

Wow - it seems there are lot of people who care about this little bird. I took "Pidge" as I started to call him to the Wild Bird rescue. He was a sweet little friendly guy, and it was hard to hand him over, actually. But they said he'd need a six-month rehabilition before he could fly, and as far as I know he was released and is currently living somewhere in the metro area, free again. Kat

My friends and I just saved a baby pigeon. We found it lying just under it's nest, and we called it Melody. Please tell me how things worked out and what you did- we just found her yesterday but we already love her.

So what did you in fact do to save the bird? Did you save it? I sure hope you didn't just leave it to die.

i have the same problem with a dove. the dumb friends legue said it would take it and take care of it if i could get it to them. in the mean time i have invested in a cage and dove food and have a wonderful little friend that coos at the sound of my voice and loves to cuddle into my chest and have her head scratched. i guess she doesnt need a ride to the dumb friends league anymore

As someone who has taken multiple injured birds to Wild Bird Rescue, I can tell you that they are completely overwhelmed with more birds than you can imagine. If you just go to their Asbury address, they will definitely take the bird for rehabilitation. Also, keep trying to call them. I get through every time. Their summer number is 720-297-2546. While many of the suggestions given here are sweet, they are also a bit misguided, especially when it comes to caring for baby birds. Baby birds can imprint on people without special handling, severely impairing their ability to survive once released. Many wildlife rehabilitators are overloaded during the summer months, so sometimes we have no choice but to care for them ourselves. That being said, all wildlife is better off in the hands of the folks who are trained and licensed to handle them. Good luck.

Here is a web site with a local number that may give you some answers or information. www.denverpetsitters.com/WILDbirds.htm Good luck and thanks for caring about the bird. I am taking care of a baby sparrow.

For a happy pigeon ending see my blog: http://whelkstall.blogspot.com

Kat- I do sympathize with you. I have a young Robin that one of my cats caught. I have called Wild Bird Rescue twice and they arent taking or returning calls, just taking donations I guess. Please let me know what you did. I live out in Watkins and driving out to Denver to find out that this place is closed or no longer there isn't much of an option either. If you have any suggestions I'm open. Gary

We had the same problem...our cat got to it. We just hung a wooden cage from teh tree and gave it birdseed and water. Shred up some paper to put in the bottom of the cage and make it big enough for the bird to spread its wings. After some time and healing, open the door and let the bird wander up to the top of the cage and eventually it will start to fly short distances. just make sure you have that refugee available for it. it should begin to fly after about a month or so. pick it up gently with a good pair of gloves (you don't want to get nipped at). good luck!

Contact Greenwood Wildlife Sanctuary. They help injured wildlife, and then release them back into the wild. www.greenwoodwildlife.org

If you call animal control they will give you a number to another bird sanctuary that will hold onto the pigeon till he can go out on his own. Another idea would be to take him to Tendercare at Orchard and Holly, they are one of the few vet's offices that take and treat wild animals. Hope that helps!

No doubt, if you provide him a safe haven, food and water, his feathers will eventually return. Poor thing. We have tons of squirrels and often see one or two that have been attacked by something. We just try to keep them fed and provide a safe place to hide....most get better soon and go on to have a happy squirrel life. Good luck with your little charge!

Hey No doubt on general you hate Pigeons but what that poor hurted chap has done to you. just take care of him, apply some medicine that can heal his wound fast so that he can fly again. Make a cosy place for him where in his life is not in danger. . Try to put yourself at his place and tell me how would you feel? BE SENSITIVE AND SHOW YOUR HUMANITY TO THAT POOR BIRD!!

If i would ve been at your place....i would ve cared and fed the pigeon until it develops new feathers and fly on its own. Be a human, the poor little wont harm you in nways.
