9 News' Slow News Day
It was either a slow news day for 9News or they have sunk to a new low in determining what is newsworthy.
I'm not going to link to the 9News story published late last night about U.S. Chief District Court Judge Edward Nottingham. It's nobody's business but his own. The quoted portions of transcripts from his divorce proceeding while perhaps titillating to the public are indicative neither of criminal nor immoral conduct. Topless clubs and internet dating services are legal. It's also legal for married people to frequent them and to spend money while doing so.
I will link to Judge Nottingham's publicly released statement today.
Judge Nottingham believes the underlying issues raised by Channel Nine News are private and personal matters involving human frailties and foibles, matters which have now become public as a result of protracted, bitter divorce proceedings. Judge Nottingham has attempted to deal with the issues privately, and he will continue to do so. No purpose would be served by exploring these matters publicly.Let's move along, there's nothing of public interest here. Shame on 9News for engaging in the politics of personal destruction for a ratings bump.

I went back and reread the 9 news article about the limo driver bringing the prostitutes to Judge Nottingham. It said he brought the prostitutes to the Judge's son's condo and to an unnamed second location. I asked if the second location was the Federal Court house and no one denied it. The Judge's office was private enough for porno use, he could bring his ex wife and other parties there, and typically people in his position have 24 hour a day, 7 day a week access to their government offices. Judge Nottingham's court house office would be free for him and convenient. If the second location was his residence or a hotel, you think 9 News would have said so by now. Since the 9 News article said the prostitutes said he told them he was a federal judge and told them to call him "Judge Naughty" and he had the prostitutes brought to a condo registered in his son's name, he obviously wasn't trying to keep his identity secret from the prostitutes. Judge Nottingham must just think that his position gives him immunity from any sort of review or prosecution. Total power corrupts, right?

I agree! Shame on the Denver Post as well for their extensive & wasteful coverage of this very private matter in their issue today. Nottingham has done nothing illegal & this public airing of his dirty laundry is a waste of column space. Additionaly, did the Denver media learn nothing from the tragic ending in the Lawrence Manzanares case?

This has "Nacchio" written all over it.

In one case I am aware of (NOT mine!), Judge Nottingham was supposed to perform a de novo review of a magistrate's dismissal of a pro se's case under Rule 72, but before the pro se party had a chance to present his objections as permitted under the Rule, Nottingham dismissed the case sua sponte. When the pro se party pointed this out and raised a horde of salient objections, Nottingham dismissed the case anyway, without even so much as listing a single statement of fact upon which he was supposed to rely. This was done during the time period in question.
Was Judge Nottingham too busy whacking off or soliciting trysts on his computer to do what we pay him to do? Inquiring minds want to know.

When a judge ties one on not once but twice -- so severely that he can't even recall what he did! -- he has a serious alcohol abuse problem. This kind of behavior suggests that he is enough of an alcoholic to have five-martini lunches at the Denver Athletic Club (I know he's a member) and stagger back to the bench.
It also raises questions as to whether Nottingham has taken a few bribes. If he was a regular customer at the Diamond Cabaret, and was in the habit of spending $3,000 a night getting completely wasted and having lap dances in private rooms, it's axiomatic that you can't do that too often on a $170,000 judge's salary without Wifey getting wind of it. If someone else was picking up the tab, I'd want to know who.
Now is where the real journalism should begin.

hlk, you conveniently seem to forget that Judge Manzanares (allegedly) STOLE the computer -- and that Chief Justice Mullarkey tried to pull some strings to cover for him. While we will never know now, one of the daily rags reported that some of the images were suspected child porn. We don't know where "Hanz Manz" surfed, but he knew where he was, and he probably knew that sooner or later, THEY would know where he was. Under those circumstances, it is easy to see why "Hanz Manz" might have offed himself.
If Judge Nottingham offs himself, it's probably because he knows that they are about to find something REALLY serious.
