Aurora's Ultimate Undercover Cop

The Rocky Mountain News tells the story of Aurora police officer Rick Grahn's journey to becoming Renee Grahn. It's really fascinating. The Aurora PD and its former Chief, Rick Bennett, deserve some major credit for how they adjusted to Grahn's transgenderism and came to accept it. Bennett's first reaction was to study up on "gender identity disorder." He had Grahn meet with all of the officers and answer their questions. He told the officers they were to treat Grahn with respect. Grahn later underwent gender reassignment surgery in Trinidad. She's still on the force. Another nice touch in the article is the way Grahn is referred to as "he" until the part where he undergoes the surgery. Thereafter, the article refers to Grahn as "she." It's a very thorough article, and considering all the people interviewed for it, must have been a difficult one to write. Rocky reporter Chris Barge did a good job.

-- Another nice touch in the article is the way Grahn is referred to as “he” until the part where he undergoes the surgery. Thereafter, the article refers to Grahn as “she.” -- Actually, per the transgneder entry on page 249 of the Associated Press Stylebook (2006 Edition): Use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth. If that preference is not expressed, use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly. I was at the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association Convention in San Diego this past weekend, and spent time in a long conversation with Ina Fried of CNET.com and Christine Daniels of the Los Angeles Times. During the discussions, it came up that main stream media seems to focus on our genitalia. Ina, Christine, and I realize our gender is separate from our genitalia, but because there are medical procedures involved with many transmen's and transwomen's transition from female-to-male or male-to-female, the MSM seems to be fixated on the idea that our genitalia determines our gender. On the contrary, for many transgender people who feel need to change their bodies, it's the gender "between the ears" that motivates us to change our bodies to match our gender. Basically, Renee Grahn was female before she had surgery on her genitalia. The Associated Press Styleguide regognizes that -- the Rocky Mountain News should have refered to her as she throughout the article in recognition of her gender. Not referring to her with female pronouns throughout the entire article was, frankly, disrespectful.
