Obama NFL '09

Anyone playing Xbox 360's Madden NFL 09 online in Colorado might want to give a closer look to those virtual stadium billboards. News from The Hill says Barack Obama's campaign has purchased advertising space on the popular video game in 10 swing states, including Colorado. The ads, according to the report, are downloaded via the Xbox's Internet site, and "began running Oct. 6 and will be visible until Nov. 3, the day before Election Day." In addition to Madden, Obama's advertisements can be seen on NASCAR 09, NBA live 08, NHL 09, and at least four other titles. Who knows whether the online advertisements will give Obama a boost, but they certainly hit the 18-to-34-year-old-male demographic in a unique way and represent an interesting melding of politics and technology.

This is a very good differentiation point between generations. Although, most 40 somethings and above are computer users, to varying degrees, those under 40 are no longer users. The computer is to them what clothes are to those over 35. It is a part of their lives, indistinct, other then decorative differences, from any other article of clothing. The important issue here is what will politicians do. I know I ran into resistance from "old timers" in politics last year about using the Internet capabilities for campaign purposes. I want to reach young voters, and give older voters a chance to practice their net skills by doing more with my website and online presence. I believe having more than a single boring webpage is more critical then many older, over 40, political campaign managers do. This also goes to the question of McCain regarding using the Internet and his answer of his doesn't do computers. His generation does use computers, and see in him what was, not what is and will be as America goes forward. Online and computer use is integral to life now. It is no longer a seperate part used only occasionally for special purposes. Pam
