Yet Another Serious RTD Accident

They say bad luck comes in threes. Let's hope that's the case for the Regional Transportation District. Amid continued questions about two major incidents involving buses, and three resulting deaths (so far), a third serious accident occurred yesterday. This time, an RTD bus and a 43-year-old Lafayette cyclist collided at an intersection as the bus was making a turn at a traffic light. According to 9News, the man was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center for care; his condition as of press time is unknown. As RTD digs into bus video to investigate, police have charged the driver of the Saturday incident---which left two dead and several more injured after the bus ran a red light at Eighth and Lincoln avenues in Denver---with 13 misdemeanor counts of careless driving, notes The Denver Post. A charge of careless driving is considered an accident, whereas reckless driving, a more serious charge, implicates intentional disregard for the safety of others. Tideneykiyalesh Hawariyat, an employee of RTD contractor Veolia Transporation, faces from 10 days to one year in county jail and a fine of $300 to $1,000 for each count.
