Weeding Out Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

If you take a drive along just about any commercial strip in Denver, it won't be long before you see an old convenience store or bar that's been converted into a medical marijuana dispensary. The number of dispensaries has boomed in the last year or so, prompting action from Colorado lawmakers. And now, a one-year moratorium on issuing business licenses to medical marijuana operations has gone into effect (via 7News). The state is currently home to some 1,100 dispensaries, and 9News is reporting that by this time next month, as many as half of them could shut down. Not only is there a moratorium on new businesses, but dispensary owners, contending with a lengthy paperwork process, must submit state registration information by August 1 that could cost them $7,500 to $18,000. The Denver Post, meanwhile, points out that a dispensary in Denver's River North neighborhood has gone up for sale---on eBay---as the deadline approaches.
