It’s almost the middle of August, and I haven’t been to Rocky Mountain National Park yet this summer. Most years, I’d have already made several treks to my favorite park by now. But I’ve been forced to merely daydream of alpenglow on Longs Peak and one of my favorite hikes, a lung-busting trek through Glacier Gorge via Alberta Falls, Mills Lake, and Black Lake. This weekend, though, the time is finally right: no wedding to attend, no festival or concert I can’t miss, and no out-of-town visitors to entertain. Either Saturday or Sunday will do, as the U.S. National Park Service is waiving the entrance fee to RMNT---and more than 100 other national parks in the country---both days. August 14 and 15 are National Park Fee-Free Days, two of 15 total days in 2010 when national parks waive entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. That means I can save that $10 to $20 and spend it on chocolate-covered strawberries, mini-golf, and happy hour in Estes Park after my hike. And you better believe I will.
