David Schmauder, an overnight mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service, made off with some 11,000 packages over a two-year period before being caught by government agents earlier this year, reports 9News. Schmauder, now a former employee at a post office in Highlands Ranch, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of theft by mail in federal court Monday and, according to a plea agreement, will be sentenced to up to two years in prison at a hearing in November. After he was caught, 48-year-old Schmauder confessed to stealing about 50 packages two to three nights a week since early 2008, specifically targeting boxes from retailers, such as Amazon.com, and either keeping items to gift to his wife or to resell. Receipts show that Angelo's Movies, Music and Gifts, an independent music store in the Denver area, paid Schmauder $85,174 for 11,829 items. The postal service estimates total losses at $283,913 but says there's no way to know for sure how much he stole. Schmauder's attorney, federal public defender Kathryn Stimson, has declined to comment. In other postal news, the service could face a cash-flow problem in the coming year and may face difficulties paying for future retirees, writes The Washington Post. This fiscal year, the Postal Service has already seen a net loss of roughly $5.4 billion, up from $4.7 billion in the same period of 2009.
