When the Phairatphiboon family opened their new restaurant, Busaba, in the old Siamese Plate space in Louisville this June, local expectations were high.

For the most part, Busaba (meaning “flower” in Thai) has met them, blossoming into a wonderful new lunch and dinner location, featuring Mama Phairatphiboon’s cherished Thai recipes, straight from her native Bangkok. Think tangy tom kha soup with just the right mix of coconut milk, fish sauce, and galangal, with loads of tender slices of chicken breast, crisp veggies, and earthy mushrooms; or a deeply flavorful goong ob woon sen with plump shrimp, bits of crispy bacon, and steamed bean thread noodles in a balanced sauce of sesame, soy, fresh ginger, garlic, and cilantro.

Pass on the cocktails, which tend to be overly sweet, and settle on a frosty glass of Thai iced tea or coffee. Finish with the satisfying mango sticky rice dessert that features perfectly ripe mango and loads of fresh coconut flavor.
