In our December issue, we gave you five items with which to start your very own winter survival kit. Of course, the typical mountain-going Coloradan will need more than a shovel and a headlamp. So, here are five more items to keep in your car throughout the Colorado winter.
Snack Time: A pack of Justin’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups
These Colorado-made treats might just be the perfect quick fix if you’re stuck on the road. The dark chocolate contains a small amount of caffeine to give you a boost, and the natural endorphins your brain releases after eating chocolate won’t hurt, either. justins.com
Drink Up: The 64-ounce Klean Kanteen
Sometimes the most obvious items are the ones that are the easiest to forget. Fill this gallon-sized, eco-friendly container with water and keep it in your car. Bonus: The stainless steel is durable and shouldn’t leak. kleankanteen.com
Fire Starter: Waterproof matches
Storing matches in a waterproof container is a good start, but doesn’t guarantee they’ll stay dry. Take the extra step and buy waterproof matches, which can be found at sporting goods stores. (You can also waterproof your own matches by soaking them in turpentine for five minutes.)
Think Sharp: Victorinox SwissChamp pocketknife
The Swiss Army pocketknife’s more aggressive (and better-prepared) cousin has 33 tools, including a wire cutter, wood saw, and magnifying glass. Admittedly, we’re not exactly sure what you’ll need a pair of wire cutters for, but as the saying goes: better safe than sorry. swissarmy.com
Suck It Up: Battery Operated Liquid Transfer Siphon Pump
Picture this: You run out of gas on a remote mountain road. Instead of walking to the closest gas station (who knows how far that is), you can borrow enough juice from a passing good Samaritan to get you where you need to go.
