Friday was a strange night, by any standards. I went from sipping Chardonnay at the Symphony to knocking back vodka tonics at the Ogden Theatre during the Modern Drunkard Magazine convention. (A major wardrobe challenge, fo' sho -- I changed into spill-proof jeans in the ladies' room at the Theater Cafe at DCPA before entering the dimly lit haze inside the Ogden.) I started the evening at...
Denver's population of undocumented workers have been living in fear since the murder of Detective Donald Young, allegedly committed by a man who was illegally in the country. With the slaying and subsequent manhunt, concentrated on the massive immigrant population in Los Angeles, the immigration debate has returned to the forefront of public discussion. U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Littleton,...
Following a downtown ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, area law enforcement officials joined the procession to honor Denver Detective Donald Young, who was shot to death last weekend while providing security for a private party. I've posted some pictures I took today of the procession. Firemen of Denver Station No. 1 suspended an American flag above Colfax Ave. using two...

Modern Drunkard Magazine editor Frank Rich is worried about pissing off Hunter S. Thompson's ghost. Apparently, he's giving a eulogy to the Good Doctor on Sunday to wrap up the Modern Drunkard Magazine Convention 2005 that hits the Odgen Theatre tonight through Sunday, and he's worried that if he gets too hammered he will be haunted by an angry Hunter. Looks like the fun starts this afternoon...
Last month, 5280 lost out to the New Yorker for two National Magazine Awards. Well, it's another month, and once again, we're the New Yorker's bridesmaid. Maximillian Potter's "Private Stites Should Have Been Saved" took third place in the John Bartlow Martin Awards for Public Interest Magazine Journalism. The article exposed how the Army has abused its own soldiers who request psychological...
So now that Gov. Bill Owens has reconciled with his wife, Frances, are we to assume that the First Family's marital history need never be spoken of again? That seems to be the message in this morning's Rocky Mountain News. The usually thorough Lynn Bartels takes a look at the Governor's prospects when his term ends in January 2007, but never once mentions the Owens' domestic difficulties or...
Denver's most pampered pets now have a new place to shop for couture clothing and gourmet treats. Poodles, Poms, and Chihuahuas all across town will be head over paws for macymacy, a brand-new pet boutique that just opened this week on 17th avenue between Franklin and Gilpin. We're talking serious doggie couture here. Owner Macy Matarazzo has dedicated her life to "helping nude dogs...
Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo is managing to get on everyone's nerves these days. His latest misguided act was to blame the murder of Denver Police Officer Don Young on Denver officials for their allegedly lax enforcement of immigration laws. Tancredo thinks that the suspect in the case, an undocumented Mexican named Raul Garcia-Gomez, should have been arrested and investigated by local...
The Internal Affairs department of the Secret Service interviewed the Denver Three Wednesday as part of its continuing investigation into the their ouster from President Bush's social security speech in Denver. The three, Karen Bauer, Leslie Weise, and Alex Young, were interviewed in the presence of one of their attorneys, David Miller. Miller formerly was the Legal Director for the ACLU in...
