Different Strokes

May 2011

Forget the flowers: May brings us slush-free roads and trails for cycling and running, a liberation for the formerly gym-bound athletes prepping for summer triathlons across the state. And while it’s still a tad chilly to train in the open water, triathletes like Boulder’s Mandy McLane, pictured here, are gearing up in the pool, using strokes like the butterfly to strengthen their swims. The 32-year-old, who’s only been racing for three years, went pro last year after snagging 2010 world and national championship titles as an elite amateur. Loads of similarly buff Coloradans will get their chance to test the waters this July in the inaugural Denver Triathlon—the city’s first official tri—with a plunge into Sloan’s Lake and a cardio tour of downtown Denver. On your mark.
