Coronado High School in Colorado Springs is home to the newest 2008-2009 Gatorade Colorado Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year, writes the Colorado Springs Gazette. Gatorade announced the award yesterday, giving senior sprinter LaTraia Scott a nice graduation present before she heads off to Baylor University in the fall. The award puts Scott in the running for Gatorade’s National Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year, to be announced later this month.
Scott’s work on the track is enough to make most mortals tired, but she’s also the drum major in the school’s marching band, has maintained a 4.56 GPA, and ranks No. 6 in her class. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and her church’s youth choir. She’s volunteered at the Make-A-Wish Foundation, at her local library, and as a youth track and field instructor with her school’s peer-mentoring program. Congrats, LaTraia.
