I’ve never chosen sushi restaurants as places to celebrate special occasions. That’s because at most sushi joints the atmosphere is often too casual and the menu too predictable. But two weeks ago, at Sushi Sasa, I discovered neither of those things to be true.
The space, located at 15th and Platte streets, is quietly elegant with its light wood and white tablecloths. And chef Wayne Conwell’s menu offers items not normally seen on traditional Japanese lists, including grilled Colorado lamb (served with shiitake vinaigrette); fried chicken (served Japanese style with ponzu ); and a Sasa Caesar salad.
Plus, Sushi Sasa offers an ever-changing list of daily specials built around more seasonal seafood. A recent list included Alaska king crab served sashimi style with both a spicy ponzu-and-garlic-butter sauce; a Scottish salmon sashimi served with black konbu seaweed and topped with a green tea, wasabi and yuzu-tofu dressing; and sushi-style Madai (a Japanese red snapper).
Tip: While Sushi Sasa offers an elevated sushi experience, the prices tend to match, so definitely save this place for a special occasion.
