When it comes to crêpes, what’s on the outside matters just as much as what’s on the inside. At Moontime Crepes, an eight-month-old Denver food truck, you know you’re getting the best of both.
Mike Kitchen (yes, that’s really his last name) launched the mobile crêpery at farmers’ markets last summer, but it’s been a goal of his for more than a decade. He honed his skills at Crêpes à la Cart in Breckenridge, and soon started experimenting with his own recipes. “I’ve done chicken and waffle [stuffed] crêpes, pork green chili, Cubans…” he says. “The sky’s the limit with crêpes.”
As such, you can expect his lineup of sweet and savory options—we counted 16 when we visited—to change regularly. We recommend the veggie (onions, mushrooms, tomato, spinach, goat cheese, garlic, and balsamic glaze) or Little Lilly (chicken, onions, spinach, tomato, Brie, garlic, and a cilantro-avocado sauce). If you’re looking for something sweeter, the Happy Camper has it all: chocolate (hello, Nutella), peanut butter, marshmallows, graham cracker, and banana. With winter weather putting camping on hiatus for most of us, this decadent dessert crêpe will satisfy any lingering s’more cravings.
Fanciful fillings aside, the crêpes themselves are delicate, yet firm enough to stand up to all those ingredients without breaking apart—even if you opt for the gluten-free option. Kitchen spent three months developing a gluten-free crêpe (it costs $1 extra) that tastes almost exactly like his regular recipe.
Moontime is regularly parked in front of Stem Ciders, so you can imbibe while Kitchen and assistant Smith Vounge assemble your crêpe to order and deliver it right to your seat. “It takes time,” Kitchen says. “[Making crêpes] is kind of like an art.” And like all good works of art, these are worth the wait.
You’ll typically find Moontime Crepes in Stem Ciders’ parking lot on Thursdays (4 to 10 p.m.), Fridays (3 to 11 p.m.), and Saturdays (noon to 11 p.m.). Check denvercrepery.com or Facebook for up-to-date location info. The truck is also available for catered events, or you can special-order crêpe cakes (a stack of 50 round crêpes with your choice of filling).
