Allen Andrade gave Angie Zapata’s purses to his girlfriend–Felicia Mendoza–in an effort to smooth out a rough spot in their relationship. He also told her, days after allegedly smashing Zapata’s head with a fire extinguisher, that killing the transgender Zapata “was a mistake, but what happened, happened.” That’s according to The Denver Post, reporting on recordings of jailhouse conversations that were played during Andrade’s murder trial in Weld County on Monday–the third day of testimony. In another recording, Andrade said he “can’t cry over spilled milk. It’s done. . . . It’s not like I just went up to a schoolteacher and shot her in the head, you know what I mean? It’s not like I went up to a law-abiding, straight citizen.” Prosecutors also linked Andrade to Zapata’s apartment through DNA on a purse, a cigarette butt, and a vibrator taken from the crime scene, according to the Greeley Tribune. Both the Tribune and Westword blogged from the trial yesterday.
