Wal-Mart Stores Inc. backed out of a controversial development that would have put one of its stores near the former University of Colorado Hospital campus in Denver.

In a statement, the company said that it would “continue to evaluate other opportunities to serve Denver-area customers and expand access to affordable groceries.” Residents near the proposed site voiced opposition at community meetings and with yard signs that lined neighborhood lawns.
