Black athletes have never made it into the upper echelons of alpine skiing, and the National Brotherhood of Skiers aims to change that. By 2014, the nonprofit group, which brought approximately 1,000 to Snowmass Village this week, wants to see a black alpine skier in the Olympics, according to the Aspen Times.

The difference for many skiers is time and funding. As Adrienne Wiggins, an 18-year-old skier from Alaska says, financial assistance makes a difference in her training: “My mom’s a single parent and she’s trying to support two kids in ski racing.”
