As the investigation of the mid-air plane collision over Boulder continues, the survivors of a glider being pulled by one of the planes appeared on the Today Show, and a controversial church mind-bogglingly promised to protest the funerals of the three people who died. 911 tapes show various people witnessed the tragedy Saturday. “Something just fell out of the sky. There is a lot of smoke, and it might be an airplane,” one of the callers said, as dispatchers struggled to locate the planes that contained pilot Bob Matthews and his brother, Mark, and pilot Alex Gilmer (via 7News). Gilmer’s plane was pulling a glider with pilot Reuben Bakker, Brandi Hepburn, and her 11-year-old son, Javen McDonald, inside. They told their harrowing tale to the Today Show, saying that in an instant the glider was flying through a searing fireball but came through unscathed to land safely. Investigators are still sifting through the debris, working to reconstruct the two planes to determine what happened, writes 9News. Meanwhile, the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church says it intends to protest the funerals of the three people who died in the crash, notes Westword: “Why? Apparently because people who live in Boulder are godless heathens who the Lord has decided to strike down with furious vengeance.”
