The United States Figure Skating Championships witnessed a “seismic shift” over the weekend, writes The New York Times. The old guard fell and 23-year-old Jeremy Abbot, a late bloomer, and 18-year-old Brandon Mroz, a high schooler, tore up the ice.
Both train at the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs under coach Tom Zakrajsek, who also trains women’s runner-up Rachael Flatt, according to The Los Angeles Times, which notes that Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir have lost their stronghold on U.S. men’s skating.
