The historic Darlington Electric Fountain in City Park goes live this Memorial Day, back from the dead after a bolt of lightning knocked it out of commission last June. The fountain, built more than a century ago to welcome the 1908 Democratic National Convention to Denver, was restored in 2008 in a symbolic tribute to the DNC’s return. But when a summer storm ripped through town in 2009, the lights went dark after less than a year of working order. With replacement parts in place, the mesmerizing light shows, which run every 15 minutes from dusk till 10 p.m., are set to go through Labor Day. The city’s even found a way around Mother Nature’s unpredictable temper this time around, with an automatic detection system that will shut off the electric fountain when a storm is nearby. They say lightning never strikes twice—but we’d rather not risk it.
